Inedible dates hanging from a palm tree on State Street in Santa Barbara, California.
The original photo had boring fragments of palm trunk that just didn’t add anything to my enjoyment of this cascade of fruit. I see the green, leafy end just sticking out of a finely bound book, with the cascade as a surprise when the book is opened. I shot that image with the deliberate intent to crop it narrower, but left myself options for how much to include in the final image.
I settled on a 1:4 aspect ratio, made the box the full height of the original, and slid it back and forth until I had a pleasing result. This did have the side effect of cropping off the stalk supporting the fruit, remnants of which can be seen leaving the left edge of the frame.

Dates are a traditional part of our culture, where it is considered a sign of hospitality and simply a pleasurable treat. Dates are served with Arabic coffee and sometimes yogurt.
